Thanks to KVM virtualisation, the staging server behaves like a system of its own, not like a shared sandbox. And with full root access you shape each environment exactly the way your test needs it — from kernel parameters to firewall rules.
A test environment is only useful if it matches production — same distribution, same versions, same services. So install the same system as on your live server: Ubuntu 18.04 to 25.04, Debian 9 to 13, AlmaLinux 8/9, Rocky Linux 9 or Windows Server 2019/2022 — with MikroTik RouterOS available for network scenarios, and custom ISO images supported. That way an update passes rehearsal first and reaches production second.
The real staging advantage is the three free snapshots per server: freeze a clean baseline, run the deployment, roll back, start again. A failed attempt then costs minutes instead of a reinstall, so even destructive changes such as schema migrations or package upgrades can be tried without ever touching production. If you want to keep states for longer, automated backups are available as a paid add-on.
Staging rarely needs full production size. The 16 packages start at 1 core with 20 GB of NVMe storage and go up to 20 cores with 24 GB RAM and 240 GB NVMe — enough headroom to run a load exercise close to production scale. Locations are Istanbul on a 25 Gbit uplink and New York on 10 Gbit; moving up to a larger package is possible at any time, downgrading is not, so size the server to your test objective.
Every staging server includes one IPv4 and one IPv6 address, so demos are reachable at their own address right away. Traffic is not metered; a fair-use rule applies, meaning the port speed must not be saturated continuously. The guaranteed 99.98% availability with credit for unusable time applies to test environments too — and if an experiment takes the system down, the KVM console still gets you in.
Ordering happens in the customer portal at id.hostkontor.de: choose location and package, pay monthly or yearly by credit card, bank transfer or cryptocurrency, and automatic provisioning takes it from there — usually within minutes of payment.
